NCUE Marks Milestone with First Graduates of International Master’s Programs in Science and Engineering

National Changhua University of Education (NCUE) recently celebrated a major milestone in its international education efforts with the first commencement ceremonies for its International Master’s Programs in Engineering (IMPE) under the College of Engineering and in Materials and Biological Technology and Science Education (IMPS) under the College of Science. These inaugural graduations marked not only the successful development of the programs but also NCUE’s continued commitment to cultivating global talent.

During the ceremonies, graduates reflected on the challenges of studying in a foreign country and expressed heartfelt gratitude—not only for their academic accomplishments but also for the unwavering support they received from faculty, the International Office (OICA), and their families during their most difficult moments.

At the IMPE ceremony, College of Engineering Dean Yung-Ling Lai thanked OICA Dean Hon-Man Lee for his pivotal role in bringing outstanding international students to NCUE and wished the graduates great success in pursuing careers in Taiwan. Dean Lee remarked that the event was not only a meaningful milestone for the students but also for NCUE as an institution, and he expressed appreciation for Dean Lai’s consistent support that made the program’s growth possible.

Dean Lee emphasized that IMPE is dedicated to developing the engineering talent needed in Taiwan’s high-tech industries, especially in light of the growing demand for international professionals. He encouraged the graduates to remain in Taiwan and continue contributing their expertise, supported by the resources and guidance provided by OICA.

Representing the graduating class, Indonesian student Alfredo Yosia Sakul—recipient of the Academic Excellence Award, Service Contribution Award, and Phi Tau Phi Honor—delivered a moving speech. He recounted his early struggles adapting to a new language, culture, and academic system, admitting he once feared he might fall behind. However, thanks to the kind encouragement and dedicated teaching of professors, the welcoming and supportive environment created by OICA, and the quiet support of his family, he gained the confidence to persevere. “It wasn’t because of our achievements alone, but because in the moments we needed support the most, we received it,” he said.

Another IMPE graduate, Muhammed Enes Mermer from Türkiye, described the experience as a transformative journey. Students from diverse backgrounds stepped outside their comfort zones, meeting cultural, linguistic, and academic challenges with curiosity and determination. Looking back, he said what he remembers most are not just the lectures or lab work, but the early mornings, late nights, and countless revisions—all in a country that once felt unfamiliar but soon became a second home. He noted that beyond earning a degree, graduates also developed the skills to ask meaningful questions, challenge assumptions, and think critically.

At the IMPS graduation ceremony, teachers and students took turns singing, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere amid the otherwise solemn occasion. College of Science Dean Chi-Yen Huang was joined by Professors Yang-Wei Lin, who also serves as Dean of Academic Affairs; Professor Jui-Yu Chou; and Professor Jui-Hsien Huang. Dean Huang praised the graduates not only for their academic accomplishments but also for embracing Taiwan’s culture, and noted that some had already secured employment locally. He welcomed them to stay in touch and invited their friends and families to consider joining the IMPS program to continue the spirit of international exchange.

The IMPS Academic Excellence Award was presented to Ani Satun Zahro, and the Service Contribution Award to Nelly Fitri Tampubolon, both from Indonesia. In her speech, Nelly shared that the day marked not the end, but the beginning of new dreams, responsibilities, and adventures. She recalled the uncertainty she felt upon arrival, but said that the professors and schoolmates she met quickly became like family—her source of support through the lowest, most difficult, and happiest moments—for which she was deeply grateful.

These two commencement ceremonies stand as a testament to NCUE’s commitment to advancing the internationalization of higher education. Current students expressed pride in the first graduating class, describing them as role models and a source of inspiration. They believe that with persistence, completing a master’s degree in Taiwan on time is an attainable goal. They also hope the graduates will remain connected to NCUE—returning to share their experiences and continue contributing to the legacy and growth of the international programs.
