NCUE Launches Chinese Language Camp with UNDIP to Strengthen Ties with Indonesia

To support Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy and the growing demand for Chinese learning in Southeast Asia, NCUE’s International Office Language Center partnered with Indonesia’s prestigious Diponegoro University (UNDIP) to co-host a Chinese Language Camp. The program offered UNDIP students a two-week immersion in both language and culture.

Following the camp, NCUE Dean of the International Office Hon-Man Lee and Dean of the College of Science Chi-Yen Huang traveled to Indonesia to meet with UNDIP President Dr. Suharnomo, formally acknowledging the success of this first joint project and further establishing a partnership between the two institutions. The collaboration not only highlights NCUE’s strength in Chinese language education but also deepens higher education cooperation with Indonesia and enhances efforts to attract outstanding Indonesian students to study at NCUE.

Located in Central Java, UNDIP is a public university ranked among Indonesia’s top 10 and is recognized for its research capabilities in various fields, including engineering, socio-economic studies, marine science, environmental conservation, and public health. It is strongly supported by collaborations with industries, government agencies, and international institutions, playing a key role in addressing both regional and global challenges.

The camp, approved by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, recruited outstanding UNDIP students recommended by the Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia. Courses combined daily-life Chinese with cultural themes such as market life, temple traditions, and interpersonal communication. Students also experienced traditional crafts like paper umbrella painting, spring roll making, and burnt foil art, and explored Lukang’s historic sites. At the closing presentation, participants shared their learning outcomes through songs, plays, and videos, demonstrating both their creativity and notable progress in Chinese.

The program integrated feedback from NCUE student buddies to refine teaching materials, highlighting the diversity and innovation of NCUE’s Chinese language instruction. In addition, NCUE’s International House (I-House) supported Muslim participants by providing a comfortable space for daily prayers and meals, ensuring a welcoming environment for intercultural learning.

Immediately after the camp, Dean Lee and Dean Huang embarked on an intensive visit to more than ten universities in Indonesia, including UNDIP, to explore opportunities for partnerships and collaboration. During their meeting with UNDIP President Dr. Suharnomo, they reaffirmed the success of this initial joint project, marking a milestone in the partnership. Both sides expressed a strong interest in expanding collaboration in cross-disciplinary academic exchanges.

These efforts not only strengthen NCUE’s role in international Chinese education but also encourage more Indonesian students to study in Taiwan, further underscoring the university’s commitment to fostering global engagement and advancing internationalization.
