Deans of NCUE College of Science and International Office Visit Indonesia to Strengthen Academic Ties
NCUE’s Dean of the College of Science, Chi-Yen Huang, and Dean of the International Office, Hon-Man Lee, recently completed an eight-day academic visit to Indonesia, covering Jakarta as well as Central and West Java. The itinerary included visits to more than ten universities and research institutes. Dean Huang noted that Indonesian higher education demonstrates great potential and diversity, and local institutions have shown strong interest in collaborating with Taiwan in areas such as student exchange, faculty development, and joint research. This visit is therefore expected to open up new avenues of cooperation between NCUE and universities in Southeast Asia.
Despite a packed schedule, the delegation was warmly received at every institution and engaged in in-depth discussions on various cooperation topics. For example, in Central Java, they met with the President of Diponegoro University (UNDIP) in Semarang, exploring further collaboration based on this year’s jointly organized Chinese language camp. At NCUE’s partner university, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), Dean Huang and his team participated in a roundtable with the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and several faculty members. Building on the fact that UNNES students in Biology and Chemistry have already studied or participated in exchange programs in Taiwan, the university expressed strong interest in expanding collaboration to include Physics, Mathematics, and Science Education, as well as deepening cooperation in research and teacher training.
During visits to Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) in Jakarta, and Universitas Siliwangi (UNSIL) and NCUE’s partner Universitas Komputer Indonesia (UNIKOM) in West Java, the delegation coincided with university commencement ceremonies and experienced firsthand the enthusiasm and vitality of the local academic community. The final stop of the trip, i3L University in Jakarta, also a partner university of NCUE, though smaller in scale with about 600 students, impressed the delegation with its modern facilities, strong research capabilities, and highly- caliber students, making it a promising partner for future collaboration.
Dean Huang highlighted the strong demand among Indonesian faculty for doctoral training. Taiwan, with its geographical proximity and cultural similarities, is seen as an attractive study destination. Many Indonesian professors who previously earned degrees in Taiwan recognize the quality of Taiwan’s academic environment and actively encourage their students to study there. Indonesian students also show significant interest in pursuing studies in Taiwan, with many already self-studying Chinese and seeking detailed information on tuition, living expenses, and course offerings from the NCUE delegation.
According to Dean Huang, Indonesian higher education institutions—from large-scale public universities to rigorous private religious institutions, as well as innovative emerging universities—demonstrate strong academic capabilities, solid English proficiency among faculty and students, and a general eagerness to cooperate with Taiwan. This visit not only consolidated NCUE’s existing partnerships but also expanded new channels for academic exchange, laying the groundwork for collaboration in doctoral training, student exchange, and joint research projects. It is expected to further enhance NCUE’s visibility and academic influence in Southeast Asia while attracting more outstanding Indonesian students to study in Taiwan.
