Connecting the World Through Soccer: International Student Soccer Team Officially Launched

NCUE’s Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs (OICA) officially launched the International Student Soccer Team on December 15 at the Library Lecture Hall, bringing together students from different countries through a shared passion for soccer.

The team aims to help international students integrate into campus life by fostering teamwork, trust, and cross-cultural exchange through regular training and activities. The initiative also reflects the University’s commitment to building a welcoming, inclusive, and culturally diverse learning environment. NCUE President Ming-Fei Chen stated that the University plans to seek corporate sponsorship to provide additional resources and support the long-term growth of soccer on campus.

In addition to President Chen, the ceremony was attended by Vice President Liang-Jui Chen, Yang-Wei Lin, Dean of the Office of Academic Affairs, Hon Man Lee, Dean of OICA, division chiefs from the International Office, the team coach, all team members, and students from the University’s soccer club. The event kicked off with a training highlight video and introductions of players from Indonesia, Vietnam, India, and Mainland China. A pledge led by the coach and a player representative followed, and the ceremony concluded with a symbolic ball presentation, as President Chen handed the soccer ball to Dean Lee, officially launching the team.

The idea for the team originated during an inter-university exchange at a Yunlin–Chiayi–Tainan University Alliance meeting, where NCUE Vice President Yu-Min Tseng and Dean Yang-Wei Lin of Academic Affairs learned from a partner institution experienced in promoting soccer programs. The concept was further developed by the OICA, which began recruiting international students in October under the guidance of Dean Hon Man Lee, an avid soccer enthusiast. The team now trains every Friday evening, with Dean Lee also participating in practice sessions alongside students.

In his remarks, President Chen reflected on his experience studying in Germany and emphasized the important role of sports in international student life. He encouraged team members to pursue both athletic and academic goals, including Chinese language learning, and expressed hope that many will choose to build their futures in Taiwan. He also noted that the University will actively seek support from local sportswear and soccer-related companies to help the team grow sustainably.

Vice President Chen emphasized that establishing a soccer team requires not only funding and manpower, but also passion and commitment. He noted the unique ability of soccer—one of the world’s most popular sports—to promote health, build friendships, and foster global connections, creating meaningful memories for students during their time in Taiwan.

Dean Lee thanked everyone who contributed to the team’s formation, particularly the team coach, Chih-Pei Tian, an exchange student from Gansu Normal University for Nationalities in Mainland China, who is currently studying in NCUE’s Department of Sports. Graduate student Jen-Ming Liu from the same department, along with the University’s soccer club, will continue to provide strong support. According to Dean Lee, the team has already attracted interest from the local community, with some residents eager to join training sessions—highlighting the team’s potential to serve as a bridge between the University and the wider community.

At the event, Tian shared that the team’s journey—from formation to its official launch—was made possible through mutual support and commitment. He emphasized that soccer is more than a sport; it embodies perseverance, responsibility, teamwork, and determination. He encouraged players to trust one another, respect the rules, honor opponents and teammates, and grow through every challenge—both on and off the field. With this spirit, he expressed confidence that the team will continue toward an even stronger and more inspiring future. (Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs)
