Malaysian Artists Create Murals of Hope and Inspiration at NCUE

NCUE recently hosted a cross-border art collaboration featuring distinguished alumnus Yoon Sooi Chong, hailed in Malaysia as a shining light of Chinese culture, and eight artists from the Malaysian Artists Society (PPM). They created four murals on the fifth floor of the Hu-Bin Building at Jinde Campus and along a roughly 30-meter tunnel-like passageway connecting the Baoshan Campus and Dormitory No. 10. Centered on the theme of life education, the works seek to convey messages of hope and emotional healing.

The project also marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between NCUE and PPM to strengthen artistic exchange and encourage Malaysian students to pursue studies at NCUE, and NCUE President Ming-Fei Chen presented a certificate of appreciation to each artist in recognition of their contributions.

Mr. Chong holds a master’s degree in education from NCUE and serves as the First Vice President of the International Association of Creative Arts (IACA), Malaysia, with over 30 years of experience in art education. He proposed using art to promote student recruitment in Malaysia, which inspired a 2023 project in which teachers and students from Malaysia’s Tsun Jin High School collaborated with NCUE’s Department of Fine Arts to paint the “Lotus Pond” mural on the west wall of the Jinde Campus.

For this year’s effort, Dean Hon Man Lee of the International Office invited Mr. Chong back to NCUE to help transform the dim interior of the Hu-Bin Building into a more welcoming space—one that gives students a sense of companionship and reminds them they are never alone. Mr. Chong, in turn, brought PPM President Shirley Chu and seven other Malaysian artists to join the four-day undertaking.

Inspired by nature, the murals present vivid, graceful scenes full of color and life, making them standout features on campus. International students from Indonesia, India, and Pakistan, along with Taiwanese peers, assisted in the Baoshan mural, reflecting the project’s spirit of cultural inclusiveness.

One of the Hu-Bin Building murals bears the inscription “Flowers will bloom again, and so will your smile,” a message intended to uplift students and staff alike. At the closing ceremony of the event, NCUE Vice President Yu-Min Tseng thanked the artists for their contributions, noting that the murals not only enhance the campus environment but also symbolize encouragement and mutual support. He expressed hope that the new MOU will help make NCUE a welcoming home in Taiwan for Malaysian artists and pledged continued assistance for future collaborations.

PPM President Shirley Chu praised NCUE’s hospitality and called the experience a valuable cultural and artistic exchange. The artists not only strengthened ties between Malaysia and Taiwan but also created a beautiful campus landscape that radiates positive energy to every passerby. Mr. Chong highlighted the transformative power of art, expressing his wish that the murals would provide comfort and inspiration to students for years to come.
