NCUE Opens Second Muslim Prayer Room to Strengthen Inclusive Campus Environment

National Changhua University of Education (NCUE) officially opened its second Muslim prayer room in early April 2026, marking another step in its ongoing efforts to build a welcoming and inclusive campus. The facility is designed to support the growing number of Muslim students as well as visiting international guests, reflecting the University’s commitment to internationalization and cultural respect.

Students attending the opening ceremony, particularly those from Indonesia, shared that the prayer room represents more than just a place for worship. They see it as a space where people from diverse backgrounds can learn about Muslim culture, feel at ease, and develop mutual understanding and respect.

Located in the Main Library on the Jinde Campus, the new prayer room complements the first facility established in October 2023 at I-House (International House). President Ming-Fei Chen noted that, in response to national policies encouraging international students to study and work in Taiwan, NCUE has actively expanded its global recruitment efforts. As a result, the number of Muslim students—many from Indonesia—has steadily increased, creating a growing need for dedicated prayer spaces. It is expected that this second facility further enhances the University’s multicultural learning environment and promotes mutual understanding between domestic and international students.

Dean of the International Office Hon-Wan Lee expressed appreciation to President Chen for his strong support, as well as to Dean of the Office of Library and Information Services Chao-Chin Wu for providing space within the library. He added that NCUE continues to expand opportunities for international students to study at the University through initiatives such as English-taught degree programs and the International Foundation Program. With increasing enrollment, existing prayer facilities have seen frequent use, and the new space will serve both students and visiting delegations, including an upcoming group from Indonesia.

Maulana Malik Wicaksono, a Muslim student representative, described the opening of the new prayer room as a meaningful milestone, marking the beginning of a spirit of unity and belonging among Muslim students at NCUE. He noted that the space allows students to reconnect with their faith and with one another, and emphasized that its true value lies in fostering friendship, shared understanding, and compassion.

Another student representative, Shiva Alami Nuraini, noted that the prayer room’s true spirit is reflected in how people come together to pray, learn, and build harmony with one another. She expressed hope that the space will serve not only as a place of worship, but also as a window into Muslim culture. She added that the prayer room is intended as an inclusive environment open to all, where people from diverse backgrounds can feel welcome to learn and connect, and that its values of unity, respect, and harmony will extend beyond the space into daily life.

The prayer room is located on the basement level of the library and features clear bilingual signage throughout. Thoughtfully designed, the space includes shoe cabinet with seat, separate prayer areas for men and women, a reading area, a Qibla (direction of Mecca) indicator, and a usage display panel, ensuring both convenience and privacy.

The opening ceremony was officiated by President Chen, Dean Wu, and Dean Lee, along with Dean of the Science College Chi-Yen Huang and Dean of the Engineering College Yung-Ling Lai. Director of the Language Center Hsiao-Ching Yang, Director of the International Foundation Program Tsung-Hsien Ko, and Division Chiefs of the Library and Information Services Office Wan-Chia Chen and the International Office Sally Chang were also in attendance.
